Pomeranian University in Słupsk is the state school of higher education with over 40-year tradition. It was founded in 1969 on the basis of the Cabinet (Reg. no. 18, it. 134) under the name of Teacher’s College. The basis for Higher Teacher’s College was namely the Teacher's College existing from 1957. The University is situated 18 km from the Baltic Sea in the town of Słupsk which was granted municipal rights (Magdeburgian) in 1265. At the Pomeranian University, there are 550 scientific and didactic employees including 90 professors and 200 doctors. Lectures are also conducted by visiting professors from other Scientific Institutions both domestic and foreign e.g. from Germany, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, Hungary or Great Britain. At present there are 4000 students at the Pomeranian University in Słupsk. They are offered education in 23 fields and 100 specializations both in the system of full-time studies (day studies, free of charge) as well as extramural studies (weekend studies, paid). At first-cycle degree studies (BA) and second-cycle degree studies (MA) Pomeranian University educates in 9 fields (Philology (English, Russian, German, Polish), History, Biology, Geography, Pedagogics, Fine Arts Education – speciality: Music Education and Mathematics), whereas at firstcycle studies the University educates in 12 fields (National Security, Tourism and Leisure Studies, Culture Studies, Political Science, Technical Physics /eng/, Technical and IT Education /eng/, Nursing, Medical Rescue, Public Health, Environmental Protection, Sociology, Social Works). There are also conducted studies at a doctoral level in the area of History and Literature. Pomeranian University offers post-graduate studies and courses within the area of research carried out. The Faculty of Philology and History and the Faculty of Mathematics and Science are authorized to grant scientific degrees of Doctor, respectively in the field of History, Literature and Biology. Within the next few years the University is planning to attain additional rights for conferring academic degrees of Doctor and Doctor Habilitatus.
The Publishing House has been developing successfully for the last few years and until 2013 it had already published over 700 titles. It publishes new titles every month of which the authors are both scientific employees of Pomeranian University as well as the researchers from outside the University. The permanent publications are: Baltic Costal Zone (IF 4), Słupsk Biological Studies (IF 2), Słupsk Geographical Studies, Słupsk Historic Studies, Słupsk Philological Studies – the series of Polish Philology as well as Słupsk Philosophical Studies. Pomeranian University in Słupsk takes various actions within the process of internationalization. We now have over 30 foreign partners within the LLP-Erasmus Programme. However, in the framework of international bilateral agreements - more than 40 agreements have been signed in such areas as joint research projects, participation in conferences and mutual promotion of our culture and traditions. We offer students the possibility to participate in short-term exchanges and free semester exchanges, whereas we invite lecturing staff to cooperate with our institutes in order to undertake research ventures and conduct paid classes for our students.
