Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burak KARABEY

He graduated from Dokuz Eylul University Buca Education Faculty Mathematics Education Department with a bachelor's degree and received his master's and doctorate degrees in mathematics and mathematics education, respectively, from the same university. Between 2004-2010, he worked as a lecturer in the Department of Primary Education Mathematics Education. Then, he started to work as an assistant professor in the Special Education Department in 2011 and continued his duty as the founding head of the Gifted Education Department until 2015. He is still working as an associate professor at Dokuz Eylül University, Department of Special Talented Education.

Is giftedness an advantage or disadvantage?

Being disadvantaged is an area studied by many researchers in social life and school environment. However, being disadvantaged is generally constructed within the framework of an inadequacy or absence. In this sense, whether giftedness is an advantage or a disadvantage can provide an important perspective. Within the framework of the talk, attention will be drawn to the advantages and disadvantages of gifted children and adults in the context of social inclusion and diversity.


Dr. Adam Brett

Adam is a Lecturer and Researcher at the University of Derby with research interests including SEND and LGBT+ inclusion. A secondary teacher and leader for 15 years, Adam has a great passion for LGBT+ inclusion in schools and is the co-founder of Pride & Progress; an organisation supporting schools and universities to become LGBT+ inclusive. Pride & Progress have a podcast which speaks with a range of LGBT+ educators and allies, as well as an accompanying book: 'Pride & Progress: Making Schools LGBT+ Inclusive Spaces'. Examining how schools and universities are constructed as heteronormative spaces?

In this talk, Adam will discuss the concept of heteronormativity and will examine the ways that educational spaces are often constructed to silently maintain cisgender heterosexuality as the norm. Adam will discuss the negative impacts heteronormativity can have all people within an educational setting, as well as suggest ways we can challenge its dominance to make schools and universities more inclusive spaces for all.
