Working as academicians at different state and foundation universities in Turkey for years, both of us knew that the fast-changing world had changed our teaching context too. The students were different, the techniques and materials we used during teaching were different, actually we were different.
DIVERSITY! It was everywhere. The dictionaries define it as “the practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and of different genders, sexual orientations, etc.” then that meant, we should also find ways to enrich our teaching by integrating our differences into our teaching context. We started to have ERASMUS students from different countries with different cultural backgrounds and sexual orientations. Then, I remember this became an issue among our colleagues discussing during lunch and/or in other environments asking each other what to do when they have these “different” students.
It was at that moment we decided to work on it. Learn it and embrace more students.
