About
Dr Geraldene Codina is an Associate
Professor at the University of Derby. Specialising in inclusion and special
educational needs and disabilities, Geraldene is the Programme Leader at the
University of Derby for the National Award for Special Educational Needs
Co-ordinators (SENCOs). In addition to which, Geraldene supervisors five
doctoral students whose work all focusses on inclusion. Geraldene has written a
number of publications including: the co-edited book Leading on Inclusion: The
role of the SENCO; Educational
provision for newly arrived unaccompanied sanctuary seekers aged 15–16; Decommissioning
normal: COVID-19 as a disruptor of school norms for young people with learning
disabilities.
As part of Derby’s Opportunity Area work,
Geraldene recently directed the DfE funded Opportunity Area (OA) SEND Peer
Challenge Project. Geraldene is currently
working as the Deputy Director for the End of Three-Year Review of the Access and Inclusion Model (AIM) funded by the Irish government. As part of Geraldene’s
work, she leads the ISEND Research Cluster for the Institute of Education (University of Derby). The
Cluster engages in high-quality scholarly research in the field of inclusion,
special educational needs and disability.
Prior
to working in Higher Education, Geraldene worked as a Special Educational
Needs Coordinator (SENCO), senior leader and schoolteacher in both special and
mainstream schools.
